September Class Timetable

Red Tree studio is committed to bringing an interest in and love of art and crafts to children.
Our classes teach techniques that may be used independently at home - watch as your child's creativity grows!

We use recycled/reused/reclaimed materials wherever possible and have chosen a carbon neutral venue.

Classes are held in the Lower Merri Room at CERES Community Environment Park, corner of Roberts and Stewart Streets, Brunswick East.

Cost: Early birds $38 per class (book by September 7) or $43 (book after September 7.)
Book two or more classes and save 10%.

All classes are three hours and all materials are included.

Bring lunch and stay for the day (students supervised and activities provided during one hour break.)

Geta Trinket Boxes and Fabric Pendants

Tuesday September 21 (Week 1)
9.30am-12.30pm

For ages 5-12

Geta are the Japanese wooden shoes that look a bit like thongs. Go wild and use paper, paint, sequins. glitter, beads, mirrors and ribbons to decorate a pair of papier mache lidded boxes in the form of geta.

Create a gorgeous pendant to wear yourself or give as a gift. Use fabric and markers to create a round mounted pendant. Hang your pendant on your choice of a choker wire or chain.

Mini Canvas with Easel

Tuesday September 21 (Week 1)
1.30pm-4.30pm

For ages 5-12

Create a series of three mini rectangular canvas using drawing, painting, stamping and collage techniques. Take home a mini wooden easel to display your work.

Early finishers will also create a set of magnets made from their drawings.

Pin Boards

Wednesday September 22 (Week 1)
9.30am-12.30pm

For Ages 7-12

Use fabric paint, stencils and markers to create unique fabric to make your own pin board with storage pockets. Be inspired by a Marimekko fabrics and contemporary Australian designers. Your design could incorporate patterns/drawings and/or text.

You will also design and make a series of hand-drawn fabric covered push pins to use on your board.

Kokeshi (Japanese Wooden Dolls) and Origami Wall Hangings

Wednesday September 22 (Week 1)
1.30pm-4.30pm

For ages 5-12

Back by popular demand!!!

Kokeshi are traditional Japanese wooden dolls. Look at and touch real Kokeshi from Japan and discover the painting techniques used to create them. Make your own kimono girl, ninja or samurai using a wooden form, painting techniques and Japanese chiyogami paper.

Make a beautiful origami wall hanging bringing together origami, beads, metallic thread and bells.

Giant Puppets

Thursday September 23 (Week 1)
9.30am-12.30pm

For ages 5-12

Use cardboard, fabric and a huge variety of materials to make a giant handheld puppet - great for play and as a display piece.

Portraits

Thursday September 23 (Week 1)
1.30pm-4.30pm

For ages 5-12

Create a highly patterned self portrait using paint markers in the style of artist Gustav Klimt.

Make an ornate frame using texture rubbings to complete your masterpiece!

Little Characters

Friday September 24 (Week 1)
9.30am-12.30pm

For ages 5-12

Use air drying clay and construction materials to create a cast of characters (be they realistic or from your imagination - think monsters, aliens, fairies, pirates, wizards, animals, people, etc.) You will also create an environment to display or play with your characters.

Decorative Box and Journal Cover

Friday September 24 (Week 1)
1.30pm-4.30pm

For ages 5-12

Use paint, paper, card, felt, fabric and other embellishments to create a decorative box (great for display and storage of your treasures) using collage techniques.
Create a journal, sketchbook or photo album cover using the same materials!

Pet Portraits and Sculptures

Monday September 27 (Week 2)
9.30am-12.30pm

For ages 5-12

Bring a picture or photo of your pet or favourite animal and draw a portrait in dry and oil pastel. You will create an ornate frame using texture rubbings to complete your portrait.

You will also use air drying paper clay and construction materials to create a sculpture of your pet or favourite animal.

Wall Art

Monday September 27 (Week 2)
1.30pm-4.30pm

For ages 5-12

Use paint, glue, fabric, markers and card on a stretched canvas to create wall art for your room.

Miniature Dolls

Tuesday September 28 (Week 2)
9.30am-12.30pm

For ages 5-12

Use fabric, yarn, buttons, paint, ribbon, cardboard and other embellishments to make a set of three small wooden dolls. Dolls from cultures around the world will serve as our inspiration.

Draw a framed 'batik' look picture of your dolls.

Softies

Tuesday September 28 (Week 2)
1.30pm-4.30pm

For ages 7-12

Use fabrics, threads, ribbons, buttons and beads to create cute softies sewn with love. Use a pattern base to decorate or make up your own design to sew and stuff.

Carry Bags and Badges

Wednesday September 29 (Week 2)
9.30am-12.30pm

For ages 5-12

Create your own style...

Use fabric paint, stencils, markers and embroidery to decorate a hemp/cotton carry bag.

Create fabric covered badges to enhance your bag or wear on T-shirts or jackets.

Painted Wooden Sculptures

Wednesday 29 September (Week 2)
1.30pm-4.30pm

For ages 5-12

Use wood offcuts saved and recycled form industry to make a painted wooden sculpture in the style of Alexander Girard. Choose your shapes, sketch your design and then mask and paint your sculpture in a bold graphic style.

My House - Painted Acrylic Canvases

For Ages 5-12

Create yourself a painted house! Use acrylic paint, oil pastels, fabric and square, rectangular and triangular canvases to make your current house or your dream house. Learn tips and tricks to produce paint effects, create textures and mask areas.

Robot Assemblage

For ages 5-12

Let your imagination run wild! Use metal elements, paper and card to create a collaged robot with all the buttons and dials you can imagine. We will look at examples of robots in comics, movies and vintage tin toys for inspiration.

Terrific Textures

For ages 5-8

Discover elements of art such as line, texture, pattern and colour. Create a cool artwork incorporating drawing, painting, stamping, printing and collage. You will view picture book illustrations (by some of the best illustrators) and be inspired by their techniques and colour palettes.

Puppet Workshop

For ages 5-8

Use recycled and reclaimed materials to create puppets including ballerinas, sportspeople, animals and aliens - it's your choice! We will discover a variety of puppet types including string/marionettes, finger and glove puppets.

Printed Portraits

For ages 5-12

Create a large scale portrait or self portrait using a variety of readily available printing materials such as bubble wrap, netting, cardboard, erasers, lids and sponges. Learn dry brush painting techniques to create hairstyles. You will look at cartoons and the illustrator Ed Emberley to discover ideas, tricks and tips about shape, proportion and exaggeration.

Cool Collage

Create small and large scale animal collages using printed and textured papers. Experiment with shapes and paper cutting techniques. You will look at the cut paper collages of Henri Matisse and the illustrations of Charley Harper to inspire you.

Sock Softies

Use socks to create a unique softie toy. Learn cutting, sewing and stuffing techniques to create a monster, alien, animal or anything at all! You'll definitely be inspired by the examples of softies made by makers in Australia and around the world.

Embroidered Collage

Use threads, buttons, beads, fabrics, handmade and japanese papers to create an amazing collage of geometric shapes. Learn cutting, stitching and beading techniques. Discover the colour theory and fine art techniques used by artist Sonia Delaunay to make your colour combinations pop!

Nature Drawings

Use indoor plants, succulents, cut flowers, pods and seeds as inspiration to create a modern twist on nature drawings. You will use coloured fine-liners in bold combinations to create an intricate line drawing. Collage elements will complete your masterpiece.

This crafty sculpture will mesmerise you for hours! Create a stunning wood, wire, fabric and cardboard mobile. You will be inspired by the organic shapes and styles of artists Jean Arp and John Coburn.

Cubist Animals

Discover and discuss the work of Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque. Learn techniques for blending and building colour and use the theory and techniques of cubism to create a pastel drawing of your favourite animal on a coloured background.
